A. The purpose of this section is to establish standards for the keeping of chickens in a manner that will not endanger the health, peace and safety of the citizens of the City and will promote that the chickens will be kept in a clean and sanitary condition and not be subject to suffering, cruelty, or abuse.

B. Chickens may be kept and maintained only on residentially zoned properties in the City as uses accessory to the residential use of the property and only in accordance with other City regulations pertaining to animals and subject to the following conditions and requirements:

1. No more than four (4) chickens shall be permitted to be kept for each dwelling unit, as that term is defined in Title 19, that is occupied and exists on the property.

2. Male chickens over four (4) months of age are not allowed.

3. Chickens shall be kept in a well-ventilated, enclosed coop constructed to protect the chickens against varying weather conditions and predators, including domestic dogs. The coop shall have an attached, enclosed run. The coop and run combined shall provide a minimum of ten (10) square feet of ground space per chicken.

4. All coops and runs shall be located within a side or rear yard only. Coops shall be at least twenty-five feet (25') from any neighboring dwelling and ten feet (10') from any property line. No portion of any run shall be within ten feet (10') of any property line unless the property line abuts an alley.

5. All coops and runs shall be kept in a neat, sanitary, dust-free condition and must be cleaned on a regular basis so as to prevent offensive odors.

6. At no time shall any chicken be allowed to run at large.

C. No roosters are permitted to be kept on any property located in the City.

D. A violation of any provision of this chapter shall subject the violator to C-7 civil penalties. [Ord. 2023-03 § 1, June 2023; Ord. 2021-03 § 2, October 2021.]
